A light, rhythmic popin echoes from somewhere. It is still too early to switch on the electric fan, so a single paper fan will do. Swaying summer willows, and a cat captivated by the glass vidro. The scent of a distant early summer—one I thought I had forgotten. A single scene, capturing the awakening breath of the season.
This work was created in 2017, inspired by uchiwa-e—traditional ukiyo-e fan prints. Since childhood, I have been drawn to lyrical atmospheres, like those found in the nostalgic commercials for Nikaido Shochu, a Japanese barley shochu. Rather than efficient modern tools, I feel a stronger pull toward motifs such as hand fans, which quietly carry a sense of nostalgia.
The circular composition is designed with the jigami, the paper surface of a fan, in mind. It reflects the sensation of a May afternoon, when you first begin to feel the warmth in the air. The faint breeze stirred by a fan, the gentle sway of willow branches—and somewhere outside the frame, a cat lured by those invisible sounds and currents of wind.
If, through this painting, a similar breeze were to softly pass through each viewer’s own memories, nothing would make me happier.
